Smashbooks

Thank you Vivi!

Smash books

What are they?

When Henny first asked me to do a blogpost on Smash books, I said sure why not , without any hesitation ,because of  course I know what a smash book is, I make them and use them, so no problem…Ahh perhaps there is one tiny problem , because my interpretation of what a smash book is , might  be different from its original  meaning.

A smash book ,is by definition ,a   book you “smash or squeeze “ something into , rather like a scrap book, just in a smaller and less ( much less ) structured form.

A good sized note book will usually do the trick 10 x 16 cm is a fairly easy size to work on. But it can be any size that fits into your bag or pocket if you prefer.

Then you decorate it in any way you like, and because it is your book, use it for something that is suited for you.  You can make a travel one from a trip you are taking, or plan to take, adding postcards, photos, ticket stubs, doodles comments and any other flat memorabilia you can think of. You can print out place holders like , week days  ,months , dates and words like ;fun and ugh beforehand, and have it ready to glue in, when the appropriate thing happens, or you can buy stickers , or nothing  and just write, perhaps even  holding  everything together with a hair elastic.

The main thing is that the book is suited to you.  And that it is with you in your bag, so that when something happens, you can write it down, and later elaborate by adding for example photos, or even a newspaper cut out, or recipe .  And it becomes not only your scrap book, but also your reference to something. Many people make pockets in the smash book , to hold something two sided ,they do not want to glue.

Example  of smash books ; Apart from Travel,  all about the Food you eat or like, About Books , that fascinate you, A week in your life, A Month in your life. Short Journaling about people in your life, totally Random things you like, Very specific things, like hand bags or yellow flowers . Your Kids ,Your  dogs , whatever is important to you.

And then there is my kind of smash book, which is really more like a bullet journal with pictures and personal comments  ,mostly done for reference and sometimes for daily or weekly challenges to my self,  but also done because I love to print pretty or useful things out and use them .

I have a Camera/ photo smash book that I find super useful , because I write down the lens I used , and different settings. Afterwards, sometimes I print out small photos and glue them next to the notes.  I also have pages for ideas of what to shoot, and perhaps even a colour scheme, or an effect I want to try.  What makes it a smash book rather than a journal, is the photos that goes in, and the remarks I make.

An other very personal one Involves a course I am taking in symbology ( scrap booking )  And every challenge in the course, starts with a 5 question paper, you answer before you make your page. I have a smash book with my answers, and a small copy of the page I made.
I also have one that just lives in my bag for a week or so at the time, I note things in it, and add souvenirs. There can be weeks between I do something in it.

The most satisfying thing is though, that I get to decorate pages and  print out things from cool designers ,and use it in the real world , and not just having it on my computer.

In the photos shown , there  are things from kits from; Anja Wens, Happy Scrap Arts, Synergy Ink, Taliesin ,PGD,  Tjop ,SPPP , and a few others..

If you are not asleep yet, thanks for reading to the end, and happy Smash booking.

Smashbooks

Happy Smashbooking.

Nieuw!
Wonderful smashbooks Vivi! It looks like a lot of fun making them and collecting all the things you want to put in them. I like the idea of the camera smashbook. What a great way to keep track of your photography. Thank you for sharing your process.

I love all kinds of journaling. I am very much into art journaling myself. I have several journals lying around that I draw, paint, collage in. And I have a travelers notebook/midori that I take with me wherever I go. Jotting down ideas, doodling, writing, notes, it all goes in there.

The creative process of making smashbooks, journals, etc. is such a wonderful way to organise your thoughts, whether it is for tasks and planning or memorykeeping. And for me personally it is the best way to clear my head and deal with emotions. I can really recommend trying it.

Geweldige smashbooks Vivi!
